7 Best Water Activated Eyeliners that are Affordable
Are you looking to find the best water activated eyeliners to create awesome graphic liner? These are the 7 best water activated eyeliner palettes and pots out there, approved by family and friends, that will take your creativity to a whole new level.
Whether you’re wanting to create a more subtle, sexy look, or a dramatic, colourful, funky look, I have you covered. I will be sharing tips on how to do good eyeliner and how to use water activated eyeliner alongside the best products to use.
What is Water Activated Eyeliner?
Water activated eyeliner is a type of eyeliner activated by water. Because of this, all you have to do is dip a wet brush into the pan and after mixing it will create a creamy consistency. In other words, it’s more of an adult version of face paint. And who doesn’t love face paint?!
They usually come in pots or palettes with different colours to choose from. If you wish, you can mix these colours to create unique colours to suit you and the look you’re going for. However, I would advise testing the colour combination to make sure its perfect on the back of your hand.
These products are primarily designed for more creative, intricate and detailed looks. The smaller brush you use the more control you have over the eyeliner placement. Additionally, the bigger the brush you use, the more product you pick up and the more chunky the eyeliner will be.
Picking a Brush for your Eyeliner
For beginners I’d recommend using a thin long brush. Nail brushes are the best option for precision. As I have said, the longer the brush you use, the easiest it is to apply the eyeliner for more graphic liner looks. It’s so easy to pick a fairly cheap pack off of Amazon or eBay. In order to get your hands on these, type in ‘nail art brushes’ and they will come up.
Flat angled brushes are great to use too depending on the type of look you’re trying to go for. An example of this is, By Beauty Bay multi use liner and brow brush BB212 or the Morphe V301 Angled Liner Detail brush are great for classic winged eyeliner.
How to use Water Activated Eyeliner?
Step 1:
Firstly, you’ll want to get a clean pot of water, the brush you want to use, makeup wipe and a paper towel. For example, this could be a tissue, some kitchen roll, toilet roll. You will want something you can wipe your brush on whether that be to wipe your brush to dry on after using the eyeliner or to soak up excess water if you’ve added too much to the pan.
Step 2:
Secondly, dip your brush into the water and add it to the pan swirling it around until you create a smooth, creamy consistency. I’d advise testing the liner on the back of your hand to check it’d the right consistency before applying.
Finding the right consistency is a bit of a trial and error process, but after you’ve done it a few times, it will get easier.
Step 3:
Lastly, apply how you would any other liquid liner. To keep a steady hand, I’d recommend resting your elbow on a surface.
Top Tips to get the Perfect Consistency
You may be thinking: What if I add too much water?! And how do I fix this?! It will make the product very runny and not very pigmented when tested. This is very easy to fix. You can dip the end of a tissue into the formula and it will pick up some of the excess water. After that, you can proceed to mix again and retest. If you find it’s too dry, you can always add more water. It’s always better adding too little water than too much, because who would want to waste these products?
Another problem with using too much water that you may run into, is if you’re using more than one colour to create a gradient or crossing over the top of another liner, they may bleed into each other. One way to prevent this from happening is to make sure the eyeliner is a good thickness when applying and leave to dry for a while before adding the next colour. This way your liner will say bright and not letting it mix with the other colours you’re using.
You may be thinking, how will I know if I’ve added too little water? The simplest answer to this is product will be hard to apply. It may seem dry, thick, crumbly, lumpy, or look streaky when applying. Slowly adding water until it’s the standard you want it to be is the best way to get the perfect consistency.
How to make Water Activated Eyeliner stay All Day
My favourite way to make the liner last longer, is to use a bonding agent like Inglot’s Duraline. Or, you can use setting spray instead of water. With this is mind, setting sprays will set your eyeliner in place as soon as it’s dried. And it will stop it from smudging into your other makeup.
The best way to preserve the condition of your palette and eyeliners, is to scrape a little of the product off and put it into another pan. You will want to do this as otherwise the palettes and pots can lose their texture and can make the product harder to work with going forward. Just a little bit of water can make the colours start running and bleeding into each other. To avoid this, add water or a bonding agent from there to the scraped off pigment and mix until it becomes a gel like consistency. This way you’ll preserve the palettes formula for longer and for future uses.
